The sharp ring of the telephone made the dark apartment light up with sound. The walls seemed to bend under the pressure of the sudden burst of noise.  Dan, who had until then, been asleep on the couch, awoke and groaned with annoyance at the phone which was still ringing. He sat up slowly and wiped the sweat from his brow, while doing this he noticed the clock on the wall and swore at the phone for waking him at this hour.  After composing himself, so he didn't yell at the person on the other end of the phone, he answered. "Hello" he mumbled. "Took your time General" said the low gruff voice on the other end. Dan sat for a good ten secon
